Are your gums moving away from the base of your teeth? If so, this means they are receding, and there are many reasons why this might be happening. Our dentists, Dr. Erika Johnston and Dr. Peter Rosenman, are happy to explain the reasoning behind receding gums as well as what you can do to help them.
The first thing that can cause receding gums is an aggressive oral hygiene routine. Rough brushing is usually what causes gum recession. This is because the bristles harm the gums and make them shrivel away. The best thing to do is check the type of brush you’re using. If you’re using a hard-bristled toothbrush, switch to a soft-bristled toothbrush. Then be gentle as you clean your smile.
The second thing is the excessive use of teeth whitening strips. Some over-the-counter whitening treatments have a strong whitening solution. If it touches the gums, the gums sting and move away from the teeth. So, if you use a lot of these treatments, it’s best to stop and talk to your dentist about better teeth whitening options.
The third thing is gum disease. This is a serious and dangerous dental issue that develops when plaque and tartar grow and irritate the gums. If your gums are red, swollen, and receded or if they bleed on a regular basis, it’s important to schedule an appointment with your dentist as soon as possible.
